Pharyngitis, sore throat

Pharyngitis, sore throat and also called  throat infection is a infection or inflammation of pharynx including back portion of the throat ,back third of the tongue the soft palate and tonsils .The most common cause of Pharyngitis is virus and bacteria .

Influenza, oral herpes simple, mononucleosis and RSV are the main causation virus for pharyngitis and group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus is the main bacteria.

Symptoms: In infectious Pharyngitis, other symptoms vary depending on whether the infection is viral or bacterial in viral Pharyngitis there is pain when swallowing ,runny nose ,cough, stuffy nose hoarseness of voice ,redness of eye ,redness and congested throat and in child diarrhea is also present in bacterial Pharyngitis present of fever, malaise ,headache coating on the tonsil or tongue tender lymph nodes and children also have vomiting ,abdominal pain and nausea.

But it is difficult to distinguish whether it is bacteria or viral Pharyngitis solely based on symptoms.

Diagnosis:

Examinations of throat by direct light for the redness and congestion of throat and for streptococcus pharynges, a rapid strep test is available. Culture of throat fluid can be done.

Treatment:

Because antibiotics do not work against viruses, viral Pharyngitis usually is treated by treating the symptoms.

  1. Rest
  2. Taking pain killer like acetaminophens (cetamol) ,aspirin (not for the child).
  3. Drinking plenty of water.
  4. Gragling with warm water
  5. Taking some decongested and antihistamines
  6. Vitamin C.
  7. Penicilline (amoxicillin) 7 days if allergy to this macrolide (azithomyicin) for 3 to5 days works.
  8. If this drugs doesn’t work admit to the hospital.

Prognosis

Overall, the prognosis is excellent.
