Guys could you help me find out why in patients with sickle cell anemia osteomyelitis is commonly caused by salmonella and not by other bugs??

    It is not known why Salmonella causes osteomyelitis in patients with sickle cell disease.
    But some researcher believe that capillary occlusion secondary to intravascular sickling may devitalize and infract the gut, permitting salmonella invasion and also there is reduced function of the liver and spleen together with interference with reticuloendothelial system function due to erythrophagocytosis, suppresses clearing of these organisms from the blood stream. Abnormal opsonizing and complement function probably also play a role .The expanded bone marrow with sluggish flow leads to an ischemic focus for salmonella localization.

    thanks koshish,, nice explanation…but what about osteomyelitis?? may be no one knows..i haven’t got the answer either..if anyone knkows please give a hand..
