1. Inhibit the ability of the lymphatic system to handle excessive flow
2. the oncotic pressure
3. the hydrostatic pressure and portal hypertension with or without venous collaterals.
In liver cirrhosis, there is splanchnic vasodilation due to increased vasodilatory substances such as NO, PG. This leads to increased blood flow and increased lymph production. In compensated cirrhosis, the lymphatic system is able to transport the increased lymph into the systemic circulation. But in decompensated cirrhosis, the excess lymph can’t be returned leading to intestinal wall edema. Decreased serum albumin may also play a role in this procress.
